Khwela graduates share tips on how to make the most out of your internship
Securing an Internship is easier said than done and as much as an internship gives you an opportunity to see what it’s like to work in the real world it also gives you the chance to discover yourself and what you’re interested in. To guide you on your internship, Khwela graduates have given helpful tips on how to make the most of your internship.
Siya Nyulu says the first step in making the most of your internship was to be yourself all the time; “be yourself and take time to get to know all your colleagues from all departments, be it housekeeping, front desk, the bar, everything. This will show your enthusiasm and how much you want to learn”.
While the new working environment may seem unfamiliar, it is important to remain professional, friendly and proactive.
Phumezile Mnikina also added not to give up when you have made mistakes as internships are all about learning; “Be patient with yourself. Internships are still a learning opportunity, learn and gather as much information as possible. Be prepared and gather all your survival equipment”.
On a recent workshop with Khwela graduates, Imisebenzi Yethu Founder, Amanda Ntlokwana, advised job seekers to review what they post on social media; "companies are looking at social media accounts to make sure the candidate will be a good fit for their company. Your social media can increase or decrease your chances of getting hired. Be very careful about what you post on your social media as you don't know who might be looking at it, it could be your future employer".
Ntlokwana emphasized on the importance of a LinkedIn account to create a network for recruiters.
